“Crops are unbelievable shops of power,” says photographer Tom Leighton, whose fluorescent-tinged pictures of foliage spotlight the unbelievable night life of plants in his ongoing Variegation collection. He explores the detailed colours and textures of leaves and stems, accentuating an vital counterpart to the advanced daytime strategy of photosynthesis, which creates chemical power and oxygen from daylight, water, and carbon dioxide. “After the solar fades, the method of photosynthesis stops and respiration begins,” he says. “Crops start to burn their saved sugars and breathe again in a few of the treasured oxygen they’ve created.”
Leighton primarily focuses on species discovered round his native Cornwall—usually in his personal backyard—and captures contrasting venation patterns, serrated edges, and a number of colours. He digitally removes the inexperienced tones we affiliate with vegetation to disclose glowing violet, pink, and blue hues. “It is rather experimental… There are limitless choices and strategies that I mix to get to every completed picture,” he says, sharing {that a} minor shade selection or a small crop can rework the end result.
