Impressed by the quick tales of the late Nigerian author Amos Tutuola, Mary Maka illustrates woodland creatures with fantastical traits as a part of her Limitless Forest collection. The Portugal-based artist has at all times been concerned about mythology and nature, and after studying Tutuola’s works, she determined to render spirited animals that would plausibly emerge from the pages of his books.
Typically hybrid in type, the beasts are primarily based on distinctive fears. “Hunters gave names to the phenomena and creatures that have been most scary,” Maka says. “By giving them a reputation and endowing them with human qualities, the worry turned much less intense. Spirits that had names may now be allies and assist in looking and gathering.” This sentiment grounds her work as she interprets every worry into vibrant colours, grainy textures, and playfully exaggerated options, which she hopes ameliorates panic and fear.
