In vibrant coloration, Kumkum Fernando’s hulking, hybrid figures (previously) wander by way of an enigmatic and shortly evolving world. “The melancholy characters of The Misplaced Mystics are trying to find which means, crisscrossing time and area, unmoored and chasing illusions,” says a press release from Jonathan Levine Projects, which presents the artist’s solo exhibition throughout ArtPrize.
Fernando repurposes discovered wooden, nails, and metallic particulars into modular beings, a few of which have detachable crowns. The artist attracts on a variety of worldwide traditions, from Ethiopian and Sri Lankan masks to American board video games to Buddhist and Hindu folktales. Concurrently robotic and mystical, every character interacts with its environment in a singular method. The duo in “Soul Mates,” for instance, are mentioned to have traveled 23 million mild years to seek out each other, and in “Which Means Is Dwelling,” the creature turns its three heads in a perpetual seek for path.
