A number of work by self-taught artist Glenn Hardy Jr. Born and raised in Maryland, Hardy composes idyllic scenes and portraits of black figures in moments of leisure, contemplation, and celebration. Closely influenced by Kerry James Marshall whose interrogations of Western artwork historical past works to right the omission of black figures, Hardy constructs a compendium of common moments that stand in opposition to detrimental stereotypes of black life:
“Black folks seen in a superb mild, being joyful, and having enjoyable is at all times the objective. When folks view these works, I need them to have the ability to assume again to a time the place they will recall doing one thing like what they see in each bit. We’ve all had a time the place we celebrated wins with pals, we’ve all had a favorite ice cream on the ice-cream truck, and most of us have performed video games with pals and strangers throughout recess or on the park. Experiences are essential and being seen as human is essential to having these optimistic experiences.”
