A choice of vibrant work by New York-based artist Georgia Hourdas. Born in Florida, Hourdas grew up surrounded by nature, an everlasting supply of inspiration which could be seen by means of the organic patterns and vibrant shapes depicted in her work. Utilizing shapes abstracted from recurring varieties resembling coral, flowers, planets and mushrooms, Hourdas creates items which might be embryonic and womb-like but in addition playful:
“In distinction to their ambient or photographic backgrounds, the shapes are painted in daring strong colours. Spectral ropes of shade weave in between the shapes in a fractal sample, very similar to a mycelial community within the Earth’s soil, or the swaying arms of carnation corals within the ocean. I consider the shapes as angelic beings dwelling inside a utopian world. Whereas some work are merely oil on canvas, I regularly use photographically printed material in my work as a readymade background to put my favourite superb shapes onto, with the objective of constructing them really feel nearer to actuality in an arcane manner.”
