The association of a tie and a dress shirt is dependent on two key principles : "opposition and association"..
Oppositionconsists of contrasting colors between the tie and the dress shirt. This contrast can either remain discreet, between two dark colors for example. To realize a harmonious association, you need to match two compatible colors, like complementary colors: blue and orange, green and red, yellow and purple. If you are hesitating, a good rule of thumb consists of associating a primary color with a secondary color which is partially composed by the original primary: red and brown, blue and green, yellow and orange. An impression of harmony results from the association of at least three colors. The ideas consists therefore, with a dress shirt of a unified color, of wearing a tie of at least two colors: one opposed to that of the shirt, which would be the dominant color of the tie (most often the background color), and on (that of the pattern) which makes reference to the color of the shirt. So, if you wear a light blue dress shirt, a tie decorated with a small indigo motif on a red background would work wonderfully.
Association consists of bringing out one of the colors of your shirt (if the shirt is finely striped, for example) by repeating it with your tie. However, you must avoid repeating a simple tone, for example a red tie on a pink shirt, or a navy blue tie on a sky blue shirt...
